Which of you are the People of Fadl?

The repayment of a bad action is one equivalent to it. But if someone pardons and puts things right, his reward is with Allah. Certainly He does not love wrongdoers.

(al-Shura: 42: 40)

Imam al-Qurtubi mentions in his tafsir of this ayah:

The hafiz Abu Nu’aim relates from ‘Ali bin al-Husain, may Allah be pleased with them, who said:

“When the Day of Resurrection comes a caller will call, ‘Which of you are the people of fadl?’ So a group from amongst the people will stand. It will be said, ‘Go to Paradise.’ They will then meet the angels who will ask, ‘To where (are you going)?’ They will reply, ‘To Paradise.’ The angels will ask, ‘Before the Reckoning?’ They will reply, ‘Yes.’ The angels will ask, ‘Who are you?’ They will reply, ‘The people of fadl.’ The angels will ask, ‘And what was your fadl?’ They will reply, ‘When people behaved foolishly towards us we were gentle and forbearing, when we were oppressed or treated unjustly we were patient, and when evil was done to us we pardoned it.’

The angels will say, ‘Enter Paradise – how excellent a reward for those work (and strive)!'”

(al-Jami’ li Ahkam al-Qur’an)

(Fadl means, ‘superiority; precedence, priority’. Also ‘grace, favour, kindness, graciousness, amiability, erudition, culture, refinement’.)

May we also be of the people of Fadl, Aameen, praise be to our Lord, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful, for granting such ease in this beautiful deen.
