What is a Clean Heart?

The Messenger of Allah was asked, “Which people are the best?” He replied, “Everyone who has a clean heart and truthful tongue.” They responded, “We know what a truthful tongue is but what is a clean heart?” He replied, “It is that heart which is God-conscious [taqiyy] and pure [naqiyy], in which there is no sin [ithm], injustice [baghy], hatred [ghill] or envy [hasad].”
