The Most Profitable Investment You’ll Ever Make

There are lots of different methods of investment: the stock market, unit trusts, property and so on. And there are so many get-rich-quick schemes around, everyone wanting to let you in on their little secret as to how to make loads of money really quickly (for a price of course!). Most of these things are fake though and don’t really work. But today I’d like to share with you a method that is guaranteed to work:

The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies [His reward] for whom He wills. And Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing. (2: 261)

So the way to get rich is to invest your money with Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala, by spending it in charity. The ayah above tells us that whatever we spend for His cause will be repaid to us 700 fold. That’s a return of 70 000%  on your investment! If anyone comes to you and tells you to invest your money with him and that you’ll get a return of about 100%, then you should immediately be on your guard and realise that he’s most likely a liar and a scammer. But these are the Words of the Lord of the Universe. And He does not lie. We have to believe that the above is true. The problem we have is that we would nod our heads in agreement and acknowledge that we believe it, yet we don’t have that true definite certainty within our hearts. If we did, we would act on this ayah without any difficulty.

We should realise that our wealth doesn’t belong to us. We work so hard to earn our salary that when we get paid, we feel that this is now something that we’ve earned and it belongs to us. We become possessive of it. The reality is that everything we have comes from Him. It’s merely placed under our control for a short period of time before He will take it back. So when we do get paid, we should try and set aside a certain portion of that money with the intention that it is to be given in the path of Allah. Our attitude towards that money should be that it is not something belonging to us, but rather something that is being held in trust by us before we give it to its rightful owners, the poor and needy. If we have this mindset in place then it will be much easier for us to spend that money in charity, bi idhnillahi ta’ala. We should also know, at the moment of giving it, that this act does not result in a decrease of wealth. It’s merely being stored for us until we will see the fruits of it in the next life.
