The Darkest Day

Anas ibn Malik said regarding the Prophet , “I witnessed the day he entered Madinah, and I have not ever seen any day more beautiful, nor any day more radiant, than the day the Messenger of Allah  came to us; and I witnessed the day he passed away, and I have not ever seen any day more ugly, nor any day more dark, than the day the Messenger of Allah  passed away.

(Sunan al-Darimi)

Anas ibn Malik related, “On the day the Messenger of Allah  entered Madinah, every single thing in the city was lit up; and on the day the Messenger of Allah  passed away, every single thing in the city was plunged into darkness. We had not yet even shaken off the dust from our hands after burying the Prophet  than we immediately began to detest the state of our hearts (now that he was no longer with us).”

(Sunan ibn Majah)

[I’m not going to translate this one, because I don’t think any translation could ever possibly do it justice. You have to read it in Arabic in order to be able to appreciate its beauty and its poignancy…]
