[In the introduction, Allah is praised and His greatness is proclaimed]

O noble brothers, this day is the Day of Eid, and Eid is a great and magnificent day. It is also the Day of Jumu’ah, and Jumu’ah is an Eid for this Ummah. So Allah has gathered together for us two Eids in this day of ours, and this day has thus increased in sanctity and superiority due to that. Therefore, it behooves us to thank Allah during this day and to proclaim His greatness, for Allah the Most High has said: “He wants you to complete the prescribed period (of fasting) and to glorify Him for having guided you, so that you may be thankful.”

O noble brothers, the month of Ramadan has passed and in that month we increased in God-consciousness. Therefore, it behooves us to be mindful of Allah during this day and to not disobey Him. Allah the Most High has said: “O you who have believed, fear Allah. And let every soul look to what it has put forth for tomorrow – and fear Allah. Indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what you do.”

O noble brothers, during the month of Ramadan we performed extra voluntary prayers and performed Taraweeh in the mosques. Therefore, it behooves us to not neglect the compulsory salaahs during this day. Allah the Most High has said: “Indeed, salaah is obligatory upon the believers at prescribed times.”

O noble brothers, during the month of Ramadan we recited the noble Qur’an and completed its recitation. Therefore, it behooves us to recite it in the other months of the year as well and to not abandon it until the next Ramadan. The Messenger of Allah  has said: “Persist and devote yourselves to this Qur’an.”

O noble brothers, this is a day of rejoicing and happiness. However, it behooves us that our rejoicing be with the bounty of Allah Most High and with His mercy. Allah the Most High has said: “Say, ‘In the bounty of Allah and in His mercy – in that let them rejoice.’”

O noble brothers, Allah has forbidden fasting on this day, and therefore we eat and drink to our hearts’ content. However, it behooves us to stop eating once we are full and to not overeat. The Messenger of Allah  has said: “A human being fills no container worse than the stomach. It suffices the son of Adam to eat only a few morsels which would keep his backbone upright. If it is absolutely necessary [to eat more], then it should be: a third [of his stomach] for food, a third for drink and a third for air.”

O noble brothers, it behooves us to not be extravagant and excessive in our eating and drinking during this day. Allah the Most High has said: “Eat and drink, but be not excessive. Indeed, He does not love those who commit excess.”

O noble brothers, it behooves us to not waste our money on this day. Allah the Most High has said: “And do not spend wastefully. Indeed, the wasteful are brothers of the devils.”

O noble brothers, on this day we wear new clothes and adorn ourselves with beautiful attire, and there is nothing wrong with this. However, it behooves us to not be conceited and to not strut about. Allah the Most High has said: “And do not strut about arrogantly on the earth. Allah does not love anyone who is vain or boastful.”

O noble brothers, it behooves us to stay away from the malls and marketplaces on this day. The Messenger of Allah  has said: “The most beloved places to Allah are the mosques, and the most detested places to Allah are the marketplaces.”

O noble brothers, it behooves us on this day to not envy our brothers for the bounties that Allah has favoured them with. The Messenger of Allah  has said: “Beware of envy! Indeed, envy consumes good deeds like fire consumes wood.”

O noble brothers, on this day we visit our families and beloved ones and we greet them and shake hands with one another – and this is a good and beautiful custom. However, it behooves us to not touch anyone whom it is not permissible for us to touch. This is a matter that we regard as insignificant, but it is something grave in the sight of Allah, for the Messenger of Allah  has certainly said: “For one of you to be stabbed in the head with an iron needle is better for him than to touch someone whom it is not permissible for him to touch.”[1]

O noble brothers, on this day our womenfolk adorn and beautify themselves. However, it behooves us to forbid them from making a wanton display of their beauty and to command them to cover their ‘awrah.[2] This is also a grave matter and the prohibition against it is severe, for the Messenger of Allah  has certainly said: “Women who are dressed but naked, who cause men to incline towards them and who incline towards men: their heads are like the humps of the bukht camel inclined to one side. They will not enter Jannah and will not even smell its fragrance, even though its fragrance can be smelt from such-and-such a far distance.”

O noble brothers, on this day we scent ourselves with perfume and ‘itr, for this is the sunnah of our Prophet Muhammad . However, perfume is for men, not for women, for the Messenger of Allah  has certainly said: “Every eye which casts lustful glances is a fornicator. And if a woman applies perfume and then passes by a gathering [of men] (in order to attract their attention), then she is such-and-such,” meaning a zaaniyah.

O noble brothers, it behooves us to lower our gaze on this day. Allah the Most High has said: “Tell the believing men to lower their gaze and to guard their private parts. That is purer for them. Indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what they do.”

O noble brothers, Allah has certainly made permissible for us certain things which He had made forbidden during the month of Ramadan. However, Allah has not made permissible for us disobedience and sinfulness on this day. Therefore, it is incumbent upon us to not transgress and overstep the limits set by Allah. Allah the Most High has said, “These are the limits of Allah, so do not transgress them.”

I conclude these few words of mine and I seek Allah’s forgiveness for me and for you, and for the rest of the Muslim men and women. So you too seek His forgiveness – indeed, He is the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful.

[1] For a list of all our family members whom we are allowed to touch, see Surah Nisa,  ayah 23.

[2] For women, this is the entire body except the hands and face.
