Attachment to the Dunya

Perhaps the reason for His taking the dunya away from us is so that our hearts may be emptied of it and filled with Him instead.

The pain we feel at the loss of our material possessions is a sign of the attachment of our hearts to the dunya. For if our hearts had truly been detached from the dunya as they ought to, then loss of a share of this world would not hurt us. Sometimes it is not the objects themselves that we hold dear, but our attachment to them arises due to the fact it that it was gifted to us by someone close to us. Our attachment to those people is then the cause of us being attached to those things we received from them. But this does not change anything. We still should not allow these things to creep into our hearts – for people too are merely a part of this worldly life. And the dunya deserves to reside in our hands, not our hearts. So perhaps the reason for Allah’s taking these things away from us is so that our hearts may be emptied of the dunya and filled with Him instead…
