Alhamdulillah ‘ala Kulli Haal

 

اَلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ عَلَى كُلِّ حَال             سِوَى الْكُفْرِ وَالضَّلَال

Praise be to Allah in all conditions –

barring that of disbelief or misguidance.

This is something that I was recently reminded of by one of my students. When going through trying times, it is our human nature to tend to complain of the difficulties we are facing. I suppose that this is because we wish others to commiserate and sympathise with us, so that it might make us feel a bit better about ourselves. But rather than complaining, gratefulness would be a more suitable state for us to adopt – because no matter what we are going through, things could always be worse… “At least we’re not living in a war-zone or anything,” is what he said to me, which is true. It made me realise that sometimes our personal challenges in life can blind us to the fact that we actually have it easy, in comparison to other people in the world. If we were to reflect on the blessings we do have, and on the unfortunate circumstances of those in worse situations than ours, then we would be more appreciative of everything we have been granted. The only state we cannot be grateful for being in, is if we were to fall into disbelief or misguidance. In every condition other than that, it is befitting of us to be thankful towards Allah ta’ala.

May Allah ta’ala grant ease to those in hardship and allow us to see and be grateful for all of His favours upon us despite whatever difficulties we might be going through, ameen.
